About a year or so ago I was out with a coworker and he said to me “look!, it is some of your people”. I paused and asked him what he was talking about. He said over there, see those guys with the long sleeve t-shirts, visors and sunglasses. I said oh, ok. Fisherman. I thought it was weird that he singled those guys out in that manner. He is a boater himself but not someone who fishes regularly. W ...

Kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico this past Saturday, tourist Rory O’Conner from Bellingham, Washington probably never expected to see what he saw. While on the water just off Point of Rocks in Siesta Key, Rory noticed a dog swimming about a half mile from shore. The Dog swam up to Rory who quickly lifted the frightened pup into his kayak. Realizing the dog was in distress he tried to calm him and ev ...

This is a topic we wanted to bring to light for quite some time but did not have the media to properly explain this practice. As most of you are aware, one of our main goals at SSA is the protection of our seas. It has become evident in recent years that our oceans are being hammered to the point of no return. Pollution and reckless commercial overfishing is destroying the earth’s greatest wonder. ...
In my lifetime I cannot remember a time where sharks and shark attacks have been more in the mainstream media then now. Shark attacks in Australia and South Africa have made headlines in recent months. Just yesterday a surfer in Monterey County California was attacked. The twenty seven year old is hospitalized now but does not appear to have any life-threatening injuries.
At SSA we have preached

As all of us know the Sunshine State is a fisherman’s paradise. But Florida is also a perfect place for another group of addictive individuals, golfers. Just like fisherman, golfers have many stories about their pastime. And the storie

Great news for sharks and the oceans! California Governor, Jerry Brown signed a bill yesterday, banning the sale, trade and possession of shark fins. California joins Hawaii, Washington and Guam in trying to end this horrific practice. We have been covering this issue for months and while we are happy with the decision, we will not rest until there is a worldwide ban. As we have said time and t ...
SSA anglers we need your input! I think most of us are for opening up the recreational season year round for spotted sea trout. As some of you may be aware, FWC approved several draft amendments for spotted sea trout regulations. One thing that concerns us greatly though is the proposed longer commercial season and the 150 trout per day limit based on two licensed commercial fisherman. We ask al ...
This press release was released about month ago but we figured we would share it with all of you still. With the Gulf oil disaster a year into the history books there are still great concerns for our beloved Gulf of Mexico now and for its future. Many are still concerned with the safety of Gulf seafood in particular. The press release below is from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consu ...
Our tropical paradise is filled with transplants from all over the world. Tourists and new residents of the human kind are welcomed additions to the Sunshine State. Without them most of us could not afford to indulge in our passion. Their impact financially is very beneficial to the state. However there are some transplants who do more harm than good. Turn on the evening news and you are sure to h ...
Here at SSA we have covered the plight of the world’s shark populations quite extensively. Overfishing and a rise in demand for shark fins for shark fin soup have pushed many species close to extinction. These creatures as some of you know are vital components in marine ecosystems. Healthy shark populations make for healthy oceans and as we learn more and more about these amazing creatures their v ...
For those of us that share our passion with our four legged fisherman, a day on the water is never dull. The first day out on the water with my second pup, we decided to fish a shallow grass flat. At the first spot we power poled down and readied to fish. Within a few minutes our new boy decided to leap in and go for a quick swim. At one point I wondered if he was ever coming back to the boat. He ...

This construction marvel has 4,574 squarefeet of viewing windows (largest in the world) plus a 100 foot long unde ...
