About a year or so ago I was out with a coworker and he said to me “look!, it is some of your people”. I paused and asked him what he was talking about. He said over there, see those guys with the long sleeve t-shirts, visors and sunglasses. I said oh, ok. Fisherman. I thought it was weird that he singled those guys out in that manner. He is a boater himself but not someone who fishes regularly. W ...

As I awoke this morning a smile came across my face that I was given another day to enjoy one of the most beautiful places on the planet. The plants have greened up and the birds chirped like only they do in spring. With the untimely and tragic death of the Spanish Fly host and fishing icon, Jose Wejebe last week, I have in recent days contemplated each of ours mortality and the shortness of time ...

Here at SSA we are very aware of the dollars spent each year by anglers in the Sunshine State. So when we heard the news that the Florida Lottery was introducing a new scratch-off game featuring six colorful Guy Harvey illustrations we knew they would have a winner. This is just another way us fishheads can show everyone our passion. Tickets went on sale on April 3rd and cost just $2. We suggest y ...

Kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico this past Saturday, tourist Rory O’Conner from Bellingham, Washington probably never expected to see what he saw. While on the water just off Point of Rocks in Siesta Key, Rory noticed a dog swimming about a half mile from shore. The Dog swam up to Rory who quickly lifted the frightened pup into his kayak. This is a topic we wanted to bring to light for quite some time but did not have the media to properly explain this practice. As most of you are aware, one of our main goals at SSA is the protection of our seas. It has become evident in recent years that our oceans are being hammered to the point of no return. Pollution and reckless commercial overfishing is destroying the earth’s greatest wonder. ...

Shark attacks in Australia and South Africa have made headlines in recent months. Just yesterday a surfer in Monterey County California was attacked. The twenty seven year old is hospitalized now but does not appear to have any life-threatening injuries.

As all of us know the Sunshine State is a fisherman’s paradise. But Florida is also a perfect place for another group of addictive individuals, golfers. Drive anywhere in Florida and you are sure to see golf course after golf course. And these folks are just as passionate in their pursuits as we are in ours.

Great news for sharks and the oceans! California Governor, Jerry Brown signed a bill yesterday, banning the sale, trade and possession of shark fins. California joins Hawaii, Washington and Guam in trying to end this horrific practice. We have been covering this issue for months and while we are happy with the decision, we will not rest until there is a worldwide ban. As we have said time and t ...
